Here are 6 Lifestyle Habits You Can Make Happen Today for Happy and Healthy Children!

If you have ever spent time in a classroom, you have seen firsthand the impact healthy habits can have on a child’s development and behavior.

Every classroom has a child bouncing off the walls, one who can barely keep their eyes open, and others who are alert and ready to learn! Aside from energy levels, a spectrum of behaviors ranges from “Tantruming Toddlers” to “Teacher’s Pets.” It is evident which children have healthy habits in their daily routines. There is no judgment, parenting is tough! What helps parenting run smoother is creating consistent healthy habits to foster growth and well-being for children.

Here are 6 healthy habits to start with your children today:

1. A Balanced Diet

Instilling healthy eating habits in children from a young age is important. Encourage children to eat fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Limit sugary snacks and processed foods, and make sure they drink plenty of water throughout the day.

This is easier said than done, but the trick is to introduce foods by presenting them at each meal and encouraging them to try them. Force can make them avoid foods due to a negative experience, so keep presenting new foods and try them yourself to model that they’re safe and yummy!

2. Exercise

Get Moving! Physical activity is vital for a child’s overall health and well-being. Encourage your children to exercise regularly, whether playing sports, riding bikes, or simply walking.

Limit screen time and encourage them to get some sunlight and be active for at least 30-60 minutes each day. Haven’t started yet? That’s okay. Start small with 5-10 minutes and increase over time. Any movement is progress towards a healthier lifestyle.

3. Prioritize sleep

Sleep is essential for a child’s growth and development. It repairs the body, allows for increased focus, and lowers the risk of health problems. Create a bedtime routine that promotes relaxation and sets a consistent sleep schedule. Ensure your children get the recommended amount of sleep for their age group.

4. Good Hygiene

Proper hygiene is essential for preventing illness and staying healthy! Teach your children the importance of

-washing their hands

-brushing their teeth

-bathing regularly

-using deodorant at puberty

-feminine hygiene products (pads, tampons, wipes and washes for females)

These will benefit your child’s healthy lifestyle and help keep some of the yucky germs away!

5. A Positive Mindset:

Encourage your children to practice gratitude, mindfulness, and positive thinking. It’s important to monitor what your child is reading, watching and listening to with books, shows, and the internet. Negativity affects children in a harmful way and can lead to anxiety, depression, and poor self-esteem. Help them develop self-love, a growth mindset, and resilience in the face of challenges.

Teach them to manage their emotions and communicate effectively. Encourage kids to “use their words” when they are upset. With so many tantrums and miscommunications, the world will thank you for shining light into the darkness.

6. A Nurturing Environment:

Surround your children with love, support, and positive role models. Create a safe and nurturing home environment where they feel valued and respected. Set clear expectations and boundaries, and provide consistent discipline when needed.

Conclusion

Children crave consistency and routine. Without it, they fall behind in school performance, struggle with rules and directions, and can even negatively impact kids’ development. Implementing these healthy habits into your children’s daily routines can help them grow and develop into happy, healthy, and well-adjusted individuals. Remember, as a parent, you are your child’s first and most important teacher in instilling healthy habits in life.
