How I am “Finding Wellness in Real Times (Rael Thymes),” and How You Can, Too.

Let’s be real. Times are shifting, changing and evolving. Some may describe it as “uneasiness” “anxiety-provoking” or “disappointing” or even “depressing.”
Some are happy about the changes.
Some know this is a big shift toward unraveling the systems that haven’t “worked” or been sustainable for a long time.
Some are leaping for joy for this new version of the world or America.
Anyway, I’m not here to get political on you. I’m here to say that regardless of where you stand, we are all feeling “it” in some way, shape or form.

Let’s talk about some of ways I am nurturing my wellness and peace during this what I am calling “the era of change” AKA Rael Thymes.

1. Limit and Filter Your Intake of the News.

Many moons ago, I had a therapist tell me that while I was on this healing journey that I should consider limiting how much I watch the news. I thought to myself, limit how I watch the news? What does the weather, traffic report and burglaries have to do with my therapy sessions? She told me how we the negativity of the news can affect how we view the world. If we keep seeing anxiety-triggering events such as car accidents, traffic, shootings, robberies, natural disasters and more, we tend to focus on those negative thought patterns whether we realize it or not. I was skeptical, but I figured I would hear her out on this. After all, she is the professional, right?

Well, apparently she was onto something there. I stopped watching the news. I didn’t pay it much attention, until one day, I was with my mom. She flipped on the good ole evening news. It was negativity upon negativity with one teeny weeny tidbit of a feel good story nearly packed into the viewing of doom and gloom. I felt my neck and shoulders tense. I felt the negative mindset about the world creep into my thoughts. I thought, “okay she’s onto something here.”

Now, I am all for people being informed about what’s going on locally and internationally. We all should be informed of current events as living humans. We have the right to know what’s going on around us, and know what we can do about it. I encourage you to limit your intake of the news. Imagine how you feel and think with it playing in the background all day long?
Take your time to read or view reputable sources of current events, but don’t let it consume you. Don’t let it take over how you physically think and feel within your body. Once you start to feel that shift in your mind and body, step away, close the browser, power off, or exit the video.

2. Listen to Positive Content

This ties into my first point. Negativity breeds negativity. Think about it. Have you ever had one of those days where your day starts off not on the right foot? The coffee pot doesn’t work, you spill your coffee, get stuck in traffic, then realize you missed a deadline at work or someone called out, then a client calls with a complaint. You know those days I am talking about..those days where every little thing seems to go wrong. This is a prime example of how negativity can continue down a spiral of one thing after another.

If you listen to upbeat music, you feel upbeat. You might even dance a little to yourself. Have a little pep in your step. If you listen to positive people or information, it radiates. There are MANY options anymore. There are audiobooks, podcasts, apps, lectures, affirmations, meditations, YouTube videos, and the list goes on.  Speaking of YouTube, don’t forget to subscribe to the Rael Thymes YouTube Channel!

We have so much access to positive information right at our fingertips, literally. Allow positivity to encourage a positive mindset for you. Allow more peace. Allow some of the tension to melt away. I’m not saying this is some “cure all” to the status of the world around us. Far from it. I’m here to tell you that you deserve peace. Listen to something that lifts you up during your commutes, while doing those never ending house chores or take 15 minutes to yourself.

3. Movement

I move my body everyday. I prefer my movement to be any combination of yoga, cardio and strength training. I love going to the gym and getting in my zone. I know that’s not for everyone, and that’s perfectly okay.

I encourage everyone to find a form of movement that they enjoy doing. If you enjoy it, you will keep doing it. There are many options out there. Attend fitness classes, turn on music and dance in your living room, go to the gym if that’s your thing. Some people love tending to their flower beds or garden. Walk the dog. Go for a walk with your friends. Go hiking. Ride a bike. Play pickleball. Find your thing and make movement fun! Do water aerobics or swim laps in a pool. Your mind and body will thank you.

I’m not saying you have to move your body every single day or spend hours at the gym. I’m saying be intentional about prioritizing time to move your body on a regular basis. You can move for pockets of 10-15 minutes once or twice a day. Maybe it’s walking after dinner. Maybe it’s a special activity just for you to enjoy three days a week.
Move your body for your mental and physical health. Make it a part of your routine.

Once I’ve made it a routine, I notice if I skip a day, oh boy do I feel it. I get restless energy and my body gets sore. I have to at least pace around the house while talking on the phone. You would be surprised by how many steps you can take just by walking and talking!

4. Eat fresh fruits and vegetables

You know that saying “you are what you eat.” There is some truth to that. If you eat excessive amounts of processed food and/or “junk food,” how do you feel? You tend to feel lousy, maybe even say “like junk.” Sure it tastes good at first, but that lethargy and blah feeling creeps in quite fast. We also tend to experience more hunger or cravings like we just can’t get enough, despite how it feels. Sound familiar?
I noticed the more lean proteins, nutrient dense meals with fresh fruits and vegetables that I ate consistently, the better I felt. My brain felt clearer and sharper. My energy level was boosted. I could get more done in the day. My mood was more optimistic. Some of the pessimism walks away with “the junk.”

I hope that you try at least one of these recommendations to improve your mental and physical health during these very Rael Thymes. I will continue to post more tips and tricks like this throughout this blog.

Remember take time for you.

You deserve peace.

We can get through this.

I’m rooting for you.🫶

I am leaving you with a poem I wrote about navigating anxiety and panic attacks. This is to advocate for everyone that struggles with anxiety, PTSD or panic attacks. It sums up how a lot of the tools I’ve discussed above can make a positive impact on symptoms of anxiety.

You are not alone.

We can find wellness in Rael Thymes…

Here it Comes
Here it comes, hello to the unwelcome and uncomfortable sensation
It’s here to offer its distasteful presentation
In my defense, I drum up a grounding conversation
Repeating positive statements and affirmations

I want to step out of my crawling skin
From the panic-stricken state within

Withdrawal from this body and troubled mind
A sanctuary of peace is what I’m trying to find

On the inside, can’t find solace
On the outside, I appear polished

Exercise and movement provides mental and physical calm
From this internal, conflicting qualm

The sweat and heat melts away the despair
The heart pumps with vitality, nourishing the whole human with care

Stretching out the self-limiting lies from the truth
Regenerating the torn and tense fibers with kindness and couth

Hydrating the physique with oxygen and fluidity
Detoxifying what doesn’t serve me with invalidity

The lungs expand, breathing life to the mind, body and soul
Replenishing this human to feel peace, complete and whole.
